**SCOPE**

The training school (TS) in Biobanking aims to improve awareness and knowledge of project partners on the biobanking of samples and data of cancer patients to boost collaborative transnational research for translation regulation in cancer.
The TS will be held in English.
This 3-day event includes training activities with lectures, case studies, expert panel discussions and hands-on training sessions. 

The Training School offers participants the opportunity to:
- Enhance their knowledge for collecting, processing, and storing high-quality human biospecimens.
- Learn applicable hands-on techniques related to informed consent, data management, biospecimen collection, and storage.
- Shorten the time required to access biospecimens in biobanks.
- Understand ethical and privacy issues related to biobanking.
- Increase opportunities for forming collaborations with experts in quantitative tissue analysis.

The TS will cover the following main subjects:
1.	The basics of biobanking
2.	Legal and ethical issues for biobanking
3.	Quality management in biobanking
4.	Informed consent in biobanking
5.	Biospecimen collection, processing, and storage
6.	Preparation of clinical samples for transport
7.	Efficient access of samples and data from several different sources via biobanks
8.	Biobank directories: Finding, requesting, and using bio-banked specimens and data.

**ELIGIBILITY**

Researchers at different career stages are eligible to apply to the training school, including graduate students of any level, post-doctoral researchers, faculty members, and professionals who work with biobanks.
Priority will be given to early career researchers.

**APPLICATION**

Send the enclosed application form by email to nese.atabey@ibg.edu.tr and sanem.avci@ibg.edu.tr with “Application to TRANSLACORE training school” as subject. 

Applications are due May 8, 2024.

Invitations will be sent on the 10. May. 2024.

Participants need to be registered on the eCOST platform (https://e-services.cost.eu/user/login) and be part of COST action TRANSLACORE (CA21154). After being accepted to the training school, participants will receive an official invitation from e-COST.
Selection of trainees will be based on your motivation letter, impact summary, and country of primary affiliation.

**FEES & REIMBURSEMENT**

The TS is organized under funding from TRANSLACORE COST Action and participation in the TS will be completely reimbursed for selected trainees (20 candidates). Reimbursement includes full board and lodging, as well as travel expenses and transportation to and from IBG.



### The REPORT

**TRANSLACORE Biobanking Training School was held at Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center
Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) hosted the COST-TRANSLACORE Training School on Biobanking between 10-12 June 2024.** 

The event aimed to increase the awareness and knowledge of project partners on biobanking of biological samples and associated data used in cancer-related translational regulatory studies. The event, organized to promote collaborative multinational research in this field, was supported by the CA 21154-TRANSLACORE-COST project (https://translacore.eu/).


Trainees participated in a wide range of activities, including presentations, case studies, interactive panel discussions with experts, and hands-on training sessions. COST-TRANSLACORE Biobank Training School was held with the participation of 28 trainees from different countries across Europe under the instructorship of:

- Prof Neşe Atabey (Director of IBG Biobank, TR); 
- Prof John Le Quesne (University of Glasgow, CRUK Scotland Research Institute, UK); 
- Andrea Wutte, MSc (Head of Quality Management at BBMRI-ERIC, AU);  
- Dr. Pamela McCall (Director of the Glasgow Tissue Research Facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, UK); 
- Attorney Ahmet Esat Berktaş, LL.B., LL.M.,TR;   
- Joan Wilson, (Biomedical Specialist at NHS Grampian Biorepository, UK); 
- Dr. Séverine Tabone-Eglinger (Director of the Lyon Leon Berard Cancer Center Innovative MODels Initiative, FR); 
- Assoc Prof Özkan Özdemir (Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, TR); 
- Dr. Sanem Tercan Avcı (IBG Biobank Manager, TR);  
- Dr. Ece Akhan Güzelcan, (Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, TR);
- Dr. Yücel Erbilgin (Istanbul University Aziz Sancar Research Center, TR). 

A comprehensive training program is provided for participants to improve their biobanking knowledge and skills.
The training program included not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in obtaining, processing, and storing high-quality human biological samples, which are critical for effective cancer research.
The event also focused on methods to facilitate research by reducing the time required to access biological samples and related data in biobanks. In addition, training on ethics, confidentiality, consent forms, quality standards, and accreditation processes was organized. The event provided a platform where participants could interact with leading experts in the field, paving the way for future collaborative research. The hands-on sessions offered participants a practical experience they could immediately apply to their work.
IBG-Biobank aims to further contribute to the advancement of cancer research through biobanking applications.

TRANSLACORE will organize a 3-day Training School from June 10th to June 12th, 2024, at the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center in Izmir, Turkey. These three days will encompass a combination of lectures, case studies, meetings with experts, and practical training sessions. 
**The deadline for applications has been extended to the 8th of May 2024.**
